What to Bring With You

Clothing

At the Institute you should dress as you would for an international conference - in formal business style, either Western or appropriate to your own national tradition. Business styles for women vary a good deal between continents, and we ask women participants to select skirt lengths that would not cause offence in more conservative Christian cultures.

Bear in mind that the training centers are air-conditioned and that you may need to bring some warm clothing like a sweater or shawl.

For games and recreation please bring suitable sports and footwear. Good footwear is essential. T-shirts, shorts, slippers and thongs are not allowed for class.

Singapore is normally warm throughout the year. Temperatures average 25-33 C (77-90 F). Bring light cotton clothing. Maui is similarly warm in summer (June to August) but cool at other times. Temperatures average 70-85 F.

Check weather conditions in countries en route where you may have to transit, as some of them may be very cold at certain times of year. Please note that all lecture rooms are air-conditioned, and you may need a light sweater at times during lectures. The centre at Maui also has a pool, a fitness centre, and soccer and volleyball courts

Medication

Before coming, have a thorough check up of your eyes and teeth (decayed teeth can cause problems during travel, and you will have to pay the dental bills yourself). If you are taking medication (insulin, anti-hypertension tablets, anti-malarial tablets, and so on), please remember to bring an adequate supply with you. Medicines are expensive. In Maui, it will cost you $140 just to see a doctor and get a prescription.

Cultural items

In the course of the seminar, at least one evening will be devoted to songs and skits. Please bring a musical instrument commonly used in your culture (if you can fit it in your luggage). This will accentuate the richness of the program. You are encouraged to bring national or formal dress for special occasions, group photographs, paper presentations and Convocation.

Books

The Haggai Institute training centres are constantly expanding their libraries for the benefit of all participants. We may not be aware of what is being published in your country. If you have a good book - about your country, its culture, or Christian themes like leadership and evangelism - and would like to donate it to the library, please bring a copy with you. If you know of other good publications, please supply us with a list, including author, title, publisher and date of publication.

Laundry

You will be staying in hotel-style accommodation, so you WON'T need towels or bedding. Washing machines and dryers are provided.
