Arriving at Maui

Immigration Control

You are likely to arrive first at Honolulu International Airport. Here you will be required to go through Immigration and Customs. Show the Immigration Officer your travel documents and letter of invitation. When he or she asks you how long you plan to stay in the United States, answer "Five weeks." If you don't ask for this much time, and are granted less, you will later need to pay US$140 to get an extension of stay.

Remember that the 2002 INS Clarification of the Non-Immigrant Visitor Rules states that:

The burden is on the visitor to explain to an INS Immigration Inspector the nature and purpose of the visit, in order for the Inspector to determine "a period of time that is fair and reasonable for the completion of the purpose of the visit." When Inspectors cannot determine a fair and reasonable period of admission, INS will grant a 30-day period of admission. If an alien establishes the need for a period of stay, longer than 30 days, the Inspector will grant an appropriate and proportionate period of admission.

The Immigration officer will give you a white card. Make sure you keep this carefully with your passport. Double-check the expiration date of your entry permit.

Baggage Claim

You must collect your luggage at the Baggage Claim before you board your next plane. Hiring a baggage trolley costs US$2.00. After clearing Customs, re-check your heavy luggage at the counter nearby for transfer to Aloha (or Hawaiian) Airlines. If your luggage is lost or damaged, please report to the airlines counter BEFORE you leave the airport. Be sure that you have a receipt from the proper authority for unclaimed baggage. Keep your Baggage Claim checks carefully.

Flying to Maui

When you have checked in your heavy luggage, walk to the Aloha (or Hawaiian) Airlines building and check in for your flight to Maui (Kahului Airport). The flight is only 20-25 minutes.

On arrival at Kahalui Airport, walk to the Baggage Claim and collect your luggage. Go to the free courtesy phone in the baggage area, call for Speedi Shuttle by dialling 65, and follow instructions.

To rendezvous with the shuttle, exit the building and cross the road till you reach the road divider. At the road divider you will see a glass shelter on the left. Please wait at the shelter (behind the taxicabs) for the SpeediShuttle van. It will either be there already, or will arrive in a few minutes. The vans are white with blue or red lettering.

If you cannot find the courtesy phones, ask for directions at the Maui Visitors Information Desk, which is located in the baggage claim area. If you still have a problem, call the Haggai Institute office at (1-808-874-5197).

If travel delays are likely to result in changes to your arrival time, please give us a courtesy call (1-808-874-5197) or have the airline send us a fax (1-808-875-1723). That way, we can reschedule your pick-up as to avoid extra charges.
